What is Prehab?
Prehab is the name given to physical therapy performed prior to a known surgery. We help you exercise and improve strength prior to the surgery in order to recover faster and better from your planned surgery.
Goals
- Get stronger and more flexible for your upcoming surgery
- Learn exercises that you might be doing after your surgery and where your physical therapy might be focused when you return after your surgery
What does Prehab look like in the clinic?
We will do a formal initial evaluation to determine what deficits you might have in strength, range of motion, balance, etc. After the evaluation we will focus our exercises on those deficits and any strengthening or stretching that will help you recover faster after your surgery. For instance, we might strengthen your legs, specifically quads and hamstrings, and stretch your quads, hamstrings and calves prior to a knee replacement.
When is the right time to do Prehab?
Anytime!
Prehab exercises will be beneficial for you to start any time before a surgery. It is more beneficial if you start as early as you know you might be having a surgery! The more time you can spend on the exercises before the surgery, the better your outcomes will be!
